I wanted to write to you all about how I am managing myself in today’s political climate.
News flash: I’m not
It is really scary to be a trans person right now. I am everything the right hates. I’m trans, gay/pansexual, and polyamorous. I am married to a man. Like all the things they could dislike, I am.
So how do I cope? I stay away from the news as much as possible. I only follow some of the politics and only some of the time. Most of my instagram feed is cute frogs and transgender artists. Otherwise, I distract myself. I read romance books and watch cute, lighthearted shows/movies. I run and workout at the gym to better myself. Running has truly been an escape for me these last few months.
If you’re looking for a way to cope in these times, ask yourself some of these questions: do I have any hobbies I can get back into? Do I need to limit my social media and political intake? Do I need to make strides to better myself and what ways can I do that? Do I need to get back into therapy to learn more coping skills?
Despite all the craziness of life and politics, I’m glad we have a community where we can connect, learn, and cherish each other!
Heres a list of common coping skills to try out:
Box breathing or other kinds of breathing exercises
Grounding techniques
Meditation
Progressive muscle relaxation exercises
Distraction through reading, movies, shows
Engagement in hobbies such as art or reading or crafting
Spending time with loved ones
This is a non exhaustive list. What else would you add as a coping skill? Let me know in the comments.
